Committee members needed!

Serve on a United Way committee to learn more about what United Way does:

Campaign Cabinet:  This group is responsible for the administration of our annual fundraising campaign.

Communications Committee:  This committee helps to highlight the nonprofit’s positive image and keeps United Way in the public eye through press releases, public relations and marketing.  This committee is also responsible for special events.

Community Initiatives:  This committee oversees and participates in United Way programs and initiatives, such as disaster relief, EITC, 2-1-1, adult education, child literacy, etc.

Community Impact: This group develops and monitors compliance of policies associated with funded agencies, recruits and trains volunteers who determine funding priorities, and represents United Way in non-financial ways: volunteers, coalitions, needs assessments, etc.

Finance Committee:  This group works to oversee and make recommendations regarding the fiscal health of United Way operations.

Policy & Nominations Committee:  This committee addresses a variety of aspects, including personnel policy, board nominations, strategic planning, updated bylaws, and compliance issues.

Day of Caring 2008/09

United Way’s 6th Annual Day of Caring will be held in Spring 2009.  On the Day of Caring teams of volunteers from employers and other groups across Rutherford and Cannon counties will spend a portion of their workday assisting local human and health service agencies.  The teams will be working on a wide variety of projects in the area – from painting and landscaping, to delivering meals, to aiding senior citizens in the community.

Businesses or organizations interested in providing a volunteer team, should contact the United Way office at 893-7303.  Past participants include: AmSouth bank, Boys and Girls Clubs of Rutherford County, Bridgestone Firestone, Cardinal Health, Cavalry Bank, General Mills/Pillsbury, Ingram Book Group, Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation, Middle Tennessee State University College of Continuing Education and Distance Learning, MidSouth Bank, Redell Honda, Reeves Sain Drug Store, and SunTrust Bank.

Special Event Volunteers:

A fun way to get involved at United Way is to join an event planning committee.  Coming up in 2008/09 is “Women United”on May 8th which honors local women who have made a difference in our community, the annual Kelley Holcomb Celebrity Golf Tournament in July, and the Taste of Stones River on September 14th.  Join a planning committee today and have fun while benefiting a cause you believe in!

Youth for United Way:

Youth of United Way

It is with great pleasure that we announce the creation of the first “Youth for United Way” Board of Directors.  This board, made up of 15 – 25 upcoming junior and senior level high school students from Rutherford and Cannon Counties, will present local youth with the opportunity to develop leadership skills and broaden their volunteer and community involvement.  The board will also give students the opportunity to see first-hand the inner workings of a nonprofit including how funds are raised, how volunteers are recruited and used effectively, and how funds are distributed to those in need right here in our own community.

“Youth for United Way” will have 3 components: leadership, fundraising, and volunteerism.  The students will participate in monthly leadership training sessions which will encompass team building exercises, resume and interview skills training, etc.  The group component will consist of the students planning and implementing a small-scale fundraiser after which they will have the opportunity to decide how the money they raised will be distributed based on the current community needs they’ve learned.  Lastly, each student will be required to complete 6 hours of individual community service per semester at a United Way partner agency of their choice.

Below you will find applications which we encourage you to make available to upcoming juniors and seniors within the community and a timeline of events.  Applications are due on April 18th.

Thank you in advance for your support of, and involvement in, this worthwhile program.  We are excited about this new partnership and to offer this opportunity to students in Rutherford and Cannon Counties.
